NEW CERCA 01 MTR FRESH FUEL TRANSPORT CASK

Authors: G. Harbonnier, F. Obadia (CERCA); C. Anne (Transnucléaire Paris)

Abstract

Recently, transport of fresh MTR fuel elements had to overcome a lot of difficulties brought by virtually impossible licensing of old designs, and by the amount of work needed to renew the license of relatively young containers.

To be in a position to deliver fuel elements in good conditions to the reactors, CERCA has initiated a program for the development of a new transport container.

This paper presents the main aspects of this program, focusing on design philosophy, licensing authorities requirements, criticality calculation.

Description of drop tests performed to support the Safety Analysis Report is also provided.

Pursuing to favorable conclusion of drop tests, Licensing is underway by French and other European Safety Authorities and availability of the container is expected in a few month.
