Identification of Phases in the Interaction Layer between U-Mo-Zr/Al and U-Mo-Zr/Al-Si

diffusion experiments were performed between U-7wt.%
Mo-1wt.% Zr and Al or Al A356 (7,1wt.% Si) at 550ºC. In
this work morphological characterization and phase
identification on both interaction layer are presented.
They were carried out by the use of different
techniques: optical and scanning electron microscopy,
X-Ray diffraction and WDS microanalysis.
In the interaction layer U-7wt.% Mo-1wt.% Zr/Al, the phases UAl3, UAl4, Al20Mo2U and Al43Mo4U6 were identified.
In the interaction layer U-7wt.% Mo-1wt.% Zr/Al A356, the phases U(Al, Si)3 with 25at.% Si and Si5U3 were identified. This last phase, with a higher Si concentration, was identified with XRD Synchrotron radiation performed at the National Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS), Campinas, Brasil.
