Transient Analysis for HEU and LEU Designs of the FRM-II

Abstract

In the last three years several papers have been presented comparing the static behavior of the HEU and the LEU designs for the FRM-II research reactor now under construction at the Technical University of Munich. This paper presents the results of transient analyses performed for both designs: loss of flow transients, and step and ramp insertion transients. The kinetics parameters used in the transient analyses for both designs were generated using both diffusion theory and Monte Carlo methods. A comparison of the results of the transient analyses shows that both the HEU and LEU designs for the FRM-II have very similar behavior.
