The Jules Horowitz Reactor
A new test reactor for fuels and materials

ABSTRACT

The feasibility study undertaken in 1996 will be completed by the end of 1998 and will allow us to orient choices relating to different pool reactor designs and to optimize the core configuration in such a manner as to satisfy the demands set down in the specifications. As of now, the version entitled << preliminary reference >> is already considered to be satisfactory. The obligation of minimizing operating costs has led to the qualification of a high density fuel which, over a short term basis will at first be the U3 Si2 at 5.8-6gU/cm3 and afterwards, over the long term will most probably be the UZrNb2 which has the additional quality of being reprocessable.
